§9F.01 Application

§9F.02 Bicycle Signal Faces

As of the date of publication of the Virginia MUTCD, the Code of Virginia does not support the use of signal faces specifically for bicycles. Content related to the design and operation of bicycle signals has been retained in the Virginia MUTCD to support uniform application of bicycle signals in the event they are applied in the future.

§9F.03 Signal Operations for Bicycles

Standard

Bicycle signals and their associated signs shall not be used on traffic signals or highways owned, operated, or maintained by VDOT, located on VDOT right-of-way, or funded by or through VDOT, unless bicycle signals are explicitly authorized by state law.

Standard

01. At installations where visibility-limited signal faces are used, signal faces shall be adjusted so bicyclists for whom the indications are intended can see the signal indications. If the visibility-limited signal faces cannot be aimed to serve the bicyclist, then separate signal faces shall be provided for the bicyclist.

02. On bikeways, signal timing and actuation shall be reviewed and adjusted to consider the needs of bicyclists. 00a Appendices
